Resurfacing & Refinishing
What is Refinishing?
Refinishing a piece of furniture or wood is when the color or texture is changed.
Why Change the Color or Texture?
Three main reasons for refinishing furniture are oxidation, style, and repurposing.
Oxidation
Oxidation is caused by direct exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet light) and air which can cause the wood to change texture and color. Furniture that is oxidized can display features such as yellowing, cracking, rough texture, and an antique look.
Style
Simply put, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Style changes over time and that once hip new piece of furniture that matched all the looks a customer was trying to achieve, is now outdated. Style isn’t just the design of the product, it’s also the color and texture which fully define the style.
Repurposing
As furniture is passed from owner to owner, each person has their own intent for how the piece will be utilized. Understanding the intent of use will help ensure the right finish is selected. Every finish is unique in providing one or more of the following characteristics: waterproof, water resistant, UV light resistant, heat resistant, increased durability, and food safe contact.
Steps to Refinish
Every project is unique and will require a step-by-step plan on how to refinish. The refinishing process first starts with an assessment of the work piece and a consultation with the customer on their expectations of the end result. The consultation will include discussions about texture, color, and intent of use which are all important to ensure we exceed the customer expectations.
